What is a Price to Hours Worked Calculator?

A price to hours worked calculator converts any purchase price into the number of hours you must work to earn enough to buy it. Instead of seeing "$999", you see "45 hours of work" — almost a full work week. That reframe changes how you evaluate spending.

The concept comes from Your Money or Your Life (Vicki Robin, 1992) — the idea that money is stored life energy. Every dollar you spend represents minutes of your irreplaceable time on earth. A price-to-hours calculator makes that exchange rate explicit and impossible to ignore.

Time is the real price

Money is abstract. Hours are concrete. Seeing "32 hours" is more visceral than "$800" — it triggers a genuine cost-benefit decision, not just a reflexive swipe.

Behavioral economics

Studies show reframing prices as time reduces impulse purchases. You naturally pause when you realize a gadget costs a full work week, not just a number on a screen.

Core FIRE tool

The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement uses this mental model daily. Every $1 saved is not just money — it's minutes of your finite working life reclaimed.

How to Calculate Hours of Work for Any Purchase

The formula is simple: Work Hours = Purchase Price ÷ After-Tax Hourly Wage. Always use your net (after-tax) wage — you can only spend take-home pay.

Work Hours = Price ÷ Net Hourly Wage

Annual salary → hourly gross

$60,000 ÷ 2,080 hrs = $28.85/hr gross

Gross → net (25% tax)

$28.85 x (1 − 0.25) = $21.64/hr net

iPhone 16 Pro ($999)

$999 ÷ $21.64 = 46.2 hours of work

That's …

5.8 workdays · 1.2 work weeks

Life Energy Cost — The FIRE Movement Perspective

The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) community adopted the life energy framework from Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez. The core insight: every dollar spent is not just money — it is an irreversible portion of your finite working life.

FIRE practitioners use a price to hours worked calculator for every significant purchase. Before buying a $40,000 car, they calculate: at my current savings rate, how many months of retirement does this car cost? That reframe — from dollars to months of freedom — is the entire psychological mechanism behind extreme savings rates of 50-70%.

💡 The FIRE calculation for any purchase:

Work hours = Price ÷ After-tax hourly wage

Months of retirement = Work hours ÷ Monthly work hours

Example: $40,000 car ÷ $30/hr = 1,333 hrs = 8.3 months of work

Is 8.3 months of freedom worth that car? Only you can decide.

How to Find Your True After-Tax Hourly Wage

Your true hourly wage is lower than your stated wage once you account for taxes, commute time, work-related expenses, and decompression time. Here are two levels of accuracy:

✓ Basic (this calculator)

  1. Annual salary ÷ 2,080 = gross hourly
  2. Enter gross + tax rate → get net
  3. Use net hourly for accurate results

Good for most purchase decisions

⚡ Advanced (FIRE method)

  1. Net annual income after all taxes
  2. Minus: commute costs, work clothes, lunches, decompression
  3. Hours: add commute + prep time to work hours
  4. True hourly = adjusted income ÷ adjusted hours

Often 20-35% lower than basic rate
